Ode to Basquiat: The Journey of Becoming a Child
These six mugs were made over the last 6 months. They were inspired by Jean Michel Basquiat, the painter who partied with Andy Warhol in the eighties. I love everything he's done. So I thought I'd run that spirit through my brain and the clay and out popped these babies! I hated them for a while, for the same reason I made them, that they are rough and unrefined, unapologetic, uncomely even.

END OF THE YEAR CLEARANCE!
It was a feeding frenzy. People poured into the pop-up jostling for position, grabbing mugs out of each other's hands. Okay. Okay. I know I'm biased but ...but there was a woman who came back to the show a month later and asked if I had the Banana Mug.>> I had just sold it 15 minutes before. She bought the Garden of Eden instead with the serpent handle. In 2021 I probably made 250 mugs. Gave away 50. Sold 20 the month before. And now it was December and people were in the gift-buying mood. The going rate is $35 a mug and I sold probably 10 full price but after the first 30 minutes I started slashing prices to $25 and under. End of the year clearance. It was the best day of the year. I sold 75 mugs in 5 hours. I was beside myself, laughing at myself... just buzzing with compliments and benjamins! I hope this doesn't come off as bragging. Clay is a private sport, hours and hours of practice and play, alone and alone but never lonely. And at the end of the year I got to put them on display, all dressed up in dollar bills, and my soul my soul, my time, my hopes and dreams all following along like beer cans tied to a car dancing on the asphalt. I was terrified to put a price on acceptance. Every dollar was a loud vote for the odd and awkward creatures of 2021. These were all the prototypes, the purest thought and invention in sand colored stoneware. My brain on clay. Very little editinmg. Breaking so many rules of convention. But is it interesting? I don't care if you think it's refined... Does it grab you by the soul? Anyway, the two shows paid off all my clay and glazes for the year. I bought a 65" TV with the rest. Or I could pay the electric bill with it.

ROGER THE TRASH MAN
Rogelio comes around once a week to pick up our recycles. I grabbed this manly mug for him and told him thanks for doing what he does. When I saw him a month later I asked about the manly mug and he said he got to use it once and then his wife stole it.
TWO BIG THUMBS UP!
So I guess manly mugs aren't just for men ;) So I grabbed another -- made from my F-150 truck tire. Thanks Roger. You're the man!
MY FIRST MUG
My daughter is a real ceramic artist. She is graduating from SFSU this year while studying abroad in Montreal. Christmas 2020 she did this handbuilding demo for the fam and I got hooked. I really wanted to explore textures and handles. This one is molded to my palm.
